Fishing on Magnetic Island

Fishing in the waters around Magnetic Island offers the recreational angler a variety of fishing unequaled anywhere in Australia.

Whether you throw a line in off the beach, rocks or jetty to fish the rich waters of Magnetic Island, or take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, the fishing is rewarding with strong fighting fish for sport as well as excellent eating.

Some of the best fishing spots don’t even require a boat, with the Picnic Bay jetty and Horseshoe Bay beachfront providing many a meal for locals and visitors.

For those who have access to a 4WD, the home for Barramundi on Magnetic Island is West Point with large fish caught regularly straight off the sand.

If you have access to a boat, Middle Reef off Picnic Bay and Orchard Rocks near Radical Bay offer plenty of spots to try your luck. If you are on a tour, make sure you ask your guide to take you to their favourite fishing spot.

Species caught around Magnetic Island include Coral Trout, Sweetlip, Red Emperor, Goldspot Cod, Bream, Flathead, Whiting, Queenfish, Mackerel, and Trevally just to name a few.

For the best local advice on whats biting where, ask your local fishing tackle shop.

Please note – fishing is not allowed in the National Parks Green Zones of Geoffrey Bay, Alma Bay, Florence Bay, Gowrie Bay, Radical Bay, Balding Bay, or any of the Five Beach Bay areas.
